SUMMARY:CT Botanical Society Fieldtrip - Wequetequock Cove\, Stonington
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 3\, 9:30 am to 11:30 am (Rain date August 10) – Wequetequock\nCove Preserve\, Stonington \nWCP consists of two meadows and hedgerows between Palmer Neck Road and Wequetequock\nCove.  There are two entrance points through the stone wall\, one to each meadow with a\nconnecting trail between them.  Mowed grass paths go around each meadow.  The total\ndistance of the combined paths is just under a mile.  A few notable species seen in September\n2024 were salt marsh fleabane Pluchea odorata\, annual and perennial salt marsh American\nasters Symphyotrichum tenuifolium\, S. subulatum\, annual woolly bean Strophostyles helvola\nand Eastern gamagrass Tripsacum dactyloides.  The preserve hosts many thicket nesting birds\,\nshorebirds and waterfowl.  Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes to avoid poison ivy.  Drinking\nwater\, sun protection and insect repellent are strongly recommended — there is very little shade.\nBeth Sullivan has been familiar with this preserve for over 10 years as its management has\nchanged to allow it to evolve from open grassland toward shrubland.  Last year she started an\niNaturalist project to inventory the plant communities and would love it if participants would\ncontribute their observations.\nDirections: From Rte 1 in Stonington\, turn south onto Greenhaven Rd.  Turn right In less than\n200 ft onto Palmer Neck Rd toward the Barn Island boat launch.  Continue 0.6 mi\nto 41°21'07.3"N 71°52'45.1"W.  The preserve is on your right.\nParking: Drive to the entrance into the preserve at its far end\, just past a yellow road curve\nmarker.  Park with care along the mowed shoulder of Palmer Neck Rd on the preserve side.  A \nfew cars can park beyond the entrance and more can line up behind the curve marker sign. Be\naware of poison ivy along the stone wall. Tick-trefoils are blooming and fruiting\, providing an opportunity to note\nthe characters that distinguish the relatively new genus Hylodesmum from Desmodium\nand to differentiate between the two New England Hylodesmum species\, which are\nmingled here. The baneberries will be in fruit\, and moist areas sport Eutrochium species\nand monkey flower. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 21\, 9:00 am (Rain Date July 12) Roger Tory Peterson Estuary\nCenter\, Old Lyme\nThe RTPEC\, a Connecticut Audubon Center\, moved into its permanent location in 2020.\nThis 5.25-acre property\, located along the Lieutenant River\, is the site of the former Bee\n& Thistle Inn. The land includes tidal riparian wetlands\, an upland open space with\nhedgerows along two property lines\, and a variety of large specimen trees. In August\,\n2024\, Chris Penniman led a CBS field trip to the RTPEC along the hedgerow adjacent\nto the Florence Griswold Museum property. This year’s trip will focus on the tidal\nriparian wetlands. Chris leads a team of volunteer UConn Master Gardeners at the\nCenter.
